The Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, Nigeria, Bishop David Oyedepo, has warned youth against the excessive use of social media. He made this known in his speech at the 15th Convocation ceremony of one of the leading tertiary institutions in Nigeria, CU, held last Friday 21st May, 2021.

The chancellor noted that the negative impact of social media on youths could not be overemphasised, as it made them lose focus and rob them of their destinies. In his words, he said, “The honour of this generation has been wiped off, chatting all day with no time left to think, plan programme and engage productively in the pursuit of any task.”

In his thought-provoking address captioned– “Wake Up Call To A Generation On The Wrong Side of History.” He said: It’s the playboy generation where young people consume a lot of garbage through social media platform.

According to the iconic gospel minister: “The trap of social media unconsciously robs people of their future by robbing them of their time. He pointed out that in the last year even some CU students contemplated suicide without success due to garbage consumed from social media.

He further enjoined the grduands to make a difference by placing real value on their time. Excessive use of social media ‘kills destiny’.

The Bishop also hinted that: “Some professionals have classified social media addiction along with drugs, alcohol and sex. Social media that is supposed to be a plus to the youth, suddenly became a minus, as everything of value is delivered through the investment of time,” he said.

The chancellor noted that life without a vision was an adventure in frustration and that life without a bearing was a burden; only those who know where they are going ever gets anywhere.”

“No one ever arrives at a future he cannot see, neither does anyone arrive at a future he is not prepared for. “It is time for every youth to wake up from slumber and take his/her destiny in their hands,” he said.

Bishop Oyedepo advised youths to get out of the nest by engaging in strategic planning as everyone was absolutely responsible for the outcome of his or her life. Warning against the disaster of social media, he charged the graduands and their parents saying- “We must wake up from our slumber to deal with this monster.”

In his conclusion, he compared his generation with this present one in these words: “Many Youths spend 10-20% of their time on their task per day. They can not match q generation that spend 70-80% of their time on their task.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Mr Abiodun Adebayo, urged the graduands to be agents of change, light-bearers, solution providers and pathfinders in confronting the numerous challenges afflicting Nigeria and the world at large.

Mr Adebayo congratulated the graduands and their parents as well as guardians on their noble achievement. A total of 1,664 students graduated for the 2019/2020 academic session.
They comprised 201 students who made first class honours among others.
